Oh, I've never been to a sleepover before! [Nagito wouldn't usually be so presumptuous as to assume he was invited, except people are very insistent he attends things here.] And you're helping, Frieda-san? That's very kind of you!
[Sorry, Frieda, you have been volunteered. It's impossible to tell, based on the guileless look on Nagito's face, if he did that on purpose or not.]
And this is where you're going to hold it? [He glances around.] You know, I'm actually pretty good at cleaning.
[Alright, Kel is in good spirits! Between all the ideas he's already come up with, Frieda latches on to just one to caution him about:]
The firepit will be outside, right?
[The last thing they need is for their most robust and spacious shelter so far to burn down! She'd feel especially bad for the groups who'll pass through here after them.]
Or else, we could capture glowworms - we don't need a real fire to cook food or warm ourselves, just the light effect. Are there any jars around to keep them in?
[Apparently, she has no objections to Nagito keeping her roped into the venture! As a matter of fact, having a task to focus on might do her good.]
Well, it's never too late to experience new things, right? Not even death could stop us, heh! Just make sure you look for something comfortable to wear, I'm going to ask everyone to try to find pajamas.
[AKA: you're invited. No one can escape The Kel. Especially not people like Nagito and Frieda who Sunny seems to like- Kel can only help the other so much, making sure he is with others who care about him is important. Sleepover? Apartment sharing? Please, just say yes.]
I was actually considering one of the big buildings at the end of the road, I just still have a lot of cleaning to do. can't find a broom, for example. What can I say- I feared doing cleaning in life, I guess cleaning supplies fear me in death. I'm the ghost of 'just leaving my stuff around', heh.
[At least he's getting used to be so casual about no longer being alive, right? His attention moved then to Frieda, even if he's careful not to accidentally hit Nagito while turning around with the bench now sitting on his shoulder.]
Yeah, duh! It's very humid here and humid wood tends to make a lot of smoke. I don't think anyone would like to deal with that. And I was thinking of gathering plants from the water and not just rocks to delimitate a proper area and make it safer. This time I have so much work to do!
[Which is a good thing... right? Less time to think about sad stuff.]
Oh? OOoooh that would be so cute. Frieda, your idea is amazing. We could even keep them inside if we all move in the same place, whichis something i hope I can convince people to do. just... little warm and cozy decorations. Like nightlights.
If you show me which building it is, I'll clean it up for you. [Nagito is very suited to finding and using brooms!] There are jars in the house over there. [Nagito gestures with his mechanical arm. Doing an inventory of whatever housing situation they're presented with is first on his list of things to do when he arrives (sometimes interrupted by recovery naps, but not this time).] I can probably find a broom, but even if I can't, I don't mind cleaning the floor with rags!
[He really wants everyone to wear pyjamas..? She makes a mental note to ask the Ferryman for a nightgown - not that she personally deems such things necessary anymore. Bags are becoming more and more needed as they're accumulating items to keep and move around with them (such as her own sunhat and collapsible buckets), but despite having lost her sandals in the Crossing and currently walking around barefoot, in her gloomy mood she barely even felt like asking for new shoes or a change of clothing to replace her drenched-and-dried set.
That said, nodding in approval at Kel's idea of making the fireplace safer and giving Nagito a small smile as he points out the location of the jars, she can't help but be at least slightly infected by their enthusiasm.]
Thank you, Nagito. I'll take care of collecting the glowworms, them - if I can find a net, it should be easy; there seem to be so many of them.
[Of course, she'll also have to make air-permeable covers for the jars, but some gauze or other thin fabric and wire or such to keep it in place (they don't have rubber bands in the Walls, so if she finds any here, she'll marvel at them!) will do the trick.]
Are you sure you two can do your parts on your own, though?
[Cleaning the room, potentially without a broom, and setting up the fireplace alone sounds like a lot of work - and it's not like that's all that needs to be done! Perhaps, it'll be more manageable if they work on each step together.]
I can do most stuff myself, really, you two should relax. I know no limits, you know? Heh...
[Kel is not suited to either find or use brooms, but he'd be stuborn as heck. He wants... he wants his companions not to struggle with tings like he's currently doing. And the idea of forcing the other to... clean i that way? It's kind of horrible. The builings aren't exactly new and what if the other ends up withs plinters in his fingers? YEs, they won't get infected nor they can get properly hurt, but it would still be annoying, right?]
Please, don't worry too much, I'll make sure we all have a great time. And, hey, it's our current pit stop soooo... we have plenty of time to chill and do our things, right? I think, at least, it always feels like we spend quite some time wherever we stop.
[BUt how was he even supposed to tell the passage of time? Kel had no idea. He'd rather focus on PJs and comfy stuff for those around him. All he had to carry with himself was a basketball so no comfy shirts for him. Not that he didn't sleep in everyday clothes even back home....]
Man. I swear, if this was some kind of videogame, glowing insects would almost suggest that a location could spawn a witch or some kind. Still, it will be awesome.
[He put down the bench and the stool, flexing in front of Frida in a most charming way- because it was part of his job 'not looking serious at all'.]
Oh, I have so few uses, so it's good to utilize me for something like this! I had to clean my entire house on my own for years, so this should be easy by comparison. [Now Nagito is referring to himself like he's some sort of tool, or perhaps an especially circumstantial video game power up. Perhaps he was the broom all along.] We're all working together anyway, right? It's better if you and Frieda-san work together.
[She really shouldn't have asked like that! Naturally, strong reliable big brother Kel and only occasionally useful tool Nagito give her nothing but assurances back.
While Kel's video game comment goes over her head, she can vaguely imagine that it's something like a comic or a TV - things he has at least seen by now -, and she laughs good-naturedly at his muscle flex. For better or worse, he has her fully convinced that he's doing fine.
Nagito's casual self-depreciation, meanwhile, is all the worse accompanied by the circumstantial reminder that he lost his parents at a young age and lived alone ever since... but she doesn't have the energy to admonish him for it and try to force some self-respect onto him. This time, he's getting away with it!]
Alright, alright. I see we're all highly capable of accomplishing our tasks. Shall we meet again here when we're all done, then?
[There's a shift in Kel's posture as he turns toward Nagito fully, his expression changing and the smile dropping just for a moment.] Oy... [His tone is more serious, like he's admonishing Nagito with more than just a frown.] Listen. I'm not going to stay silent and let you talk poorly of my good friend Nagito, okay? 'Few uses' my ass... as if people had to have an 'use' to mean to others.
[He scolded Nagito before, he'll scold him again. And again. And again. As many times as it's needed. Kel just lacks the tact or the right words to actually help- but at least Kel could remind Nagito he had actual value as a person. That... was enough? For now? Maybe he had to think harder about this.
It does, at least, convince Kel to try to give the others a bit of... 'I trust you' extra. He didn't want to rely on anyone too much, especially for anything involving the siblings, but maybe it was going to help Nagito feel more appreciated?]
Now. You're invited to the sleepover, to the housing thing, to everything, so... you can work in the cleaning. Which is something I'm not good at. We are working together. You, me and Frieda. I guess I'm going to be the idea guy and the pack mule.
[With that he turned back into the woman's direction, smiling widely in her direction like nothing had actually been wrong until a few seconds ago.]
Sounds good! Or we can meet at the building, I'm just bringing in stuff. OH! And if either of you finds anything yummy, let me know. I am vaguely aware cattails are edilbe, the stalks, thanks to a movie, but I am noooot exactly a survivalist guy.
Kel-kun should really... [...be more selective with who he calls a friend, except that rule about not putting himself down in front of Kel apparently still applies. Which makes replying difficult! Trying to figure out what to say does give him a bit of extra time to really process that invitation, though, so what pops out of his mouth next is:] Eh, you want me to live with you and everyone else?
[Which is a surprised enough tone it might count as self-deprecation, but surely surprise doesn't count?]
I, ah, I mean, that is-- [Listen. Not putting himself down is very difficult.] That is.
...Yes, I'm happy to do the cleaning. [What if he just moves on to the next topic. That's fine, right?] As for food, perhaps I could ask Ferryman-san? I seem to have pretty good, ah, results with them.
[Not luck. He doesn't have that anymore. But it's about as normal for him to reference luck as it is for him to put himself down.]
[Kel not letting Nagito get away with his self-depreciation gives Frieda comfort, though on some level she wonders if it's really alright that she's taking a backseat entirely and just serenely watching him do the heavy lifting. She feels so strangely detached from everything right now... it has to be the post-Crossing exhaustion, she reasons.
When Kel seamlessly veers back into cheerfully confirming everybody's duties, she gives him a gentle nod while Nagito mentally catches up with the all-around invitation swing Kel delivered at him. Clearly struggling to avoid a repeat of the scene that just played out, he eventually arrives at his suggestion, and again Frieda has little to contribute compared to her usual best-effort approach.]
I'm nor sure if we really need food. Has either of you felt hungry?
[They need food as little as they need a fire, her input on which Kel outright ignored, apparently eager to realise all of his ideas and not listen to any naysayers. Granted, they don't need glowworms either, but that was her compromise suggestion - now it looks like they're getting both!]
[He's not trying to ignore anyone, he merely said he'd probably rather meet in the destination house of.. everything rather than there. For now, though, his focus is Nagito. Kel seems to focus on him, frowning just a bit as he sees the other struggle *not* to put himself down- but for now there are no further comments. Merely a serious squint in Nagito's direction, silently saying 'I'm keeping my eyes on you, boy', but that seems to be all.]
Well, that seems like a great idea. Wonderful brainwork there, Nagito! you and Frieda both brought in amazing ideas [A pause, then.] That being saaaaaid. yeah definitely better if you two interact with the Ferryman. I think they know I don't trust them one bit, when I asked for a shirt their answer was no.
[He did find two shirts for the siblings but that's a whole different story.]
Mh.. not really. I mean, I think it varies from person to person but my body feels dead dead? Like. No heartbeat, no need to rest, nothing- anything 'extra' is like a fancy thing I do just because I want to, not because I have to. Still...
[he raises one finger up, grinning in Frieda's direction]
Not everything we do has to be something we need, right? Eating can be a pleasure in itself. A joy, even. [His head tilts in Nagito's direction.] Sunny loves steak! [Of course he focuses on that.] And Mari... I... [She loved Hero's food the most. But Hero is gone so it's just-] She seemed to like all the food she made for us? Cookies? I... it's weird, I don't remember that one clearly.
Oh, we definitely don't need to eat. We're dead, after all. But I can't imagine it doing any harm, either. [Probably. There's no such thing as a guarantee of safety with Nagito, but this seems about as harmless as it gets.
He notes Kel's memory confusion curiously--he learned from Mari that Kel forgot his older brother. Is this related, then?] Mari-san had food in her last Crossing memory. There was watermelon.
[Between her latest interactions with Hanako, Daniil, and now Kel, the balance within the group increasingly seems to skew towards mistrust of the Ferryman, and it discomfits Frieda - but it's the revelation that Kel had a simple request declined that really gives her pause. Why would the Ferryman generously hand out sunhats, buckets, backpacks and other things to her and several others, but deny Kel a shirt? She has trouble imagining it having been a punishment for his lack of faith... but what do they all know, really?
While she's still stuck on the matter, Kel moves on to explain why they ought to indulge in some treats, enthusiastically listing Sunny and Mari's favourite foods... and apparently stumbling over a gap in his memory. It almost makes her flinch to see his confusion, and her eyes briefly meet Nagito's. Towards Kel, she pretends to not have noticed anything.]
I wouldn't know anyone's favourite food, so I leave that to you two. There really is no harm in it, I suppose. While I'm out there, I'll bring back some flowers, too... maybe I can put some waterlilies in jars to place on the tables.
[Another thing they don't need... but she already agreed to contribute, and if it makes the others - or even just Kel - happy, isn't it worth it?]
Pleasure and necessity are two very different things. I know my body doesn't need anything right now, but I'd kill- and I say this as a joke- [totally not glancing in Nagito's direction to avoid misunderstandings] for my ma's chimichangas.
[Did they even know what they were? It didn't matter. Kel loved those and used to chug them down without any shame. As long as he was allowed to remember the taste, he was going to treasure it.
As for the mistrust toward the Ferryman... Kel just couldn't bring himself to trust something that was all about abandoning things behind and basically starting something anew... when apparently people came before them and nothing but small traces were left of their presence. Like they failed, were erased or... something.]
Ah. uh.... Watermelon was more of Aubrey's thing,I know you heard that name already Nagito, but she's.. I think Mari liked it? I swear there was something she liked more but.... I guess I was too much of a child to really pay attention, huh?
[That's not the case and he knows it. He knows Basil loves tofu the most, he knows Aubrey goes crazy for watermelon, Sunny for steak- so why can't he remember Mari's favorite?]
I'm leaving it to Nagito,I guess. The food thing. I can't cook too well so i wouldn't help even if we were given ingredients, sorry. Ma' didn't want me in the kitchen. Ah, by the way- for the crossing memories-Ferryman confirmed we can't give memories we made here sooooo, uhm. It's good if we keep sharing as much as we can, right? Anyway- flowers, jars, everything! Frieda, you're in charge of the 'romantic atmosphere' for the party. Not that it's needed but my limited party experience says it was something people liked.
Gosh, it'd be good if we had some music. I could sing but you'd probably be off better listening to a strangled chicken squeak instead.
Karaoke is pretty popular at parties, isn't it? [At least it is in Japan.] But I guess we don't have a machine. Still, I'm sure Kel-kun isn't that terrible! [Which kind of makes it sound like he thinks Kel might be at least a little terrible, but Nagito doesn't intend it that way.]
If you're, um-- [Another pause as Nagito edits out his self-deprecation.] If you're trusting me with the food, I'll make sure to do my best! And I really am confident in my cleaning abilities, as well. I'm looking forward to seeing your decoration ideas, as well, Frieda-san!
[He'll have to go to Mari and ask what she likes later. Kel is always worrying about Sunny and Mari, after all, so Nagito can just go to the source for food she might like.]
[Frieda, for her part, has no idea what chimichangas are, but perhaps she'll find out before long, seeing how Nagito is taking a big group order. More importantly, it seems like they have it confirmed now that memories made here in the afterlife can't be used to pay the toll - she notably perks up as Kel weaves that information into his party-related thoughts.
At Nagito's assurance that Kel's singing can't be that terrible, she nods empathetically - he can't admonish Nagito to not put himself down and then do it himself, even on a much lower level! -, and with Nagito summarising everybody's duties once more, it seems like they have their work cut out for them.]
It looks like we're all set. We'll meet on location, in the biggest hut at the end of the walkway?
[It's hard to gauge how long it'll take them to set everything up. Presumably, Nagito will first clean the place while Kel amasses furniture here - if she's quick in the marshes, maybe she'll be back in time to help Kel move everything over to the big building while Nagito organises the food from the Ferryman. But one way or the other, they'll manage. As the big siblings of this group, they're nothing if not resourceful!]
It is! And, hey, even if we don't have any machine maybe we can still sing. You all can sing. Not me. But trust me, I'm that terrible. They asked me to leave the church's choir when I was little!
[Because he couldn't sit still, because he didn't care about the songs, because he got bored during practice and because his adhd ass couldn't stand the long, long sermons- not because of his voice. But no one needs to know that.]
But I got plenty of other qualities, right? I know ho to play a drum, not that we got one... but maybe we can improvise.
[Yep. New memories will stay. It's one of the reasons he shares so much with Frieda, Nagito and everyone else. In a way, it's safekeeping. Still, he won't get too deep in that discussion.]
WELL- that sounds like a plan. I'll take the reins of party-making next stop, but this time? I'm choosing to rely on you two, cleaning expert Nagito and decorations expert Frieda! Let's make this place awesome!
[He's already moving. He'll probably not sit still for a minute until they meet again, but that's a small detail. One's gotta keep his mind busy, right?]

Date: 2025-05-17 05:50 pm (UTC)At Nagito's assurance that Kel's singing can't be that terrible, she nods empathetically - he can't admonish Nagito to not put himself down and then do it himself, even on a much lower level!

Date: 2025-05-17 06:31 pm (UTC)[Because he couldn't sit still, because he didn't care about the songs, because he got bored during practice and because his adhd ass couldn't stand the long, long sermons- not because of his voice.
