[The next time Nagito crosses paths with Kel in the oasis, he waves Kel down.] Good afternoon, Kel-kun! [Nagito sticks a sticker right on Kel's forehead. It's a cartoon sticker of Makoto's face with a speech bubble saying ""I CAN AND I WILL".]
[Kel? He looks confused and does wrinkle his forehead before turning around to look at his reflection in a flat piece of metal. A squint, a moment to understand what it's saying and he starts chuckling, raising both hands up and agreeing with the sticker in question.]
YOU CAN AND YOU WILL, BUDDY! THAT IS THE SPIRIT!
[He does support positivity, after all! He's... totally not yelling there, truly..]
[A wink, a finger gun, Kel grins and cannot contain the teasing mood hitting him.]
Good to see you're oh so very open about your adoration for that guy. Stickers with his face? That's even more than I'd do for my crush if I had one. [He just allows a few seconds to pass before speaking again, just waiting for the thing to sink long enough before giving Nagito a way out. Kel is not that evil.] Well, I said 'crush' because stickers with one's face seems like a LOT, you get what I mean, right? I was being silly there.
[Nagito looks a little surprised at the word choice.] Ah, does it come across that way? [It's true: Nagito had no idea that's how it seemed.] Well, it's true I have a unique appreciation for Naegi-sama's hope! But I'm just a useless speck of dust, not someone worthy of being in a relationship with someone like him.
[He doesn't object to the idea of being in relationship with a guy, at least?]
[Kel steps closer, raising one hand and moving with the intent of bonking the top of the other's head (without hurting him).]
Dude. Jokes aside- stop being like this. You're not irrelevant or anything like that, sheesh. And in relationships there's no 'worth' or 'not worth', that much spaceboy comics managed to teach me. And I don't mean just 'romantic' ones.
[There isn't enough room for too many people who don't like themselves that much, Nagito, and Kel already claimed that spot]
Stickers cool, though. I do thinkg motivational stuff is great giving our unique situation.
[While the second Crossing was easier on Frieda (and, she'd venture, on most of the others as well) than the first one had been on an emotional level, it was physically draining to a point where she still feels the exhaustion after her body has gone back to that strange not-quite-corporeal state she's gotten used to.
Worse - far worse - are the losses. First G'raha and that other person she never met, back in the cavern, then Katsuki and Makoto in the desert... and now, after the Crossing, Arche and Soo Won are gone. It has her feeling hollow inside. Personally, the disappearances of Makoto and Soo Won are hardest for her to stomach. Makoto was such a wellspring of hope and comfort to everyone, and Soo Won... she wanted to talk so much more with him, a fellow young ruler who understood the heavy weight of power. Now, she may never see either of them again.
It's with these gloomy ruminations that she wanders their new temporary home - a wood-build village in a sprawling marshland - that she comes across Kel, who is lugging furniture around. Pausing to watch for a moment, she realises that he's collecting chairs, stools, cushions and anything that can be used as such.]
Are you already planning the next assembly, Kel?
[Recalling the conversation she had with Hanako at the party in the desert, she remembers her resolve to support Kel. "There’s only so much of yourself you can give before you’re empty. If he keeps going like this… it’s only a matter of time." She's unsure if Hanako's dire prediction will really come true, or if her own assessment of Kel as a person who feels energised by putting effort into social activities will prove accurate, but it can never hurt to offer somebody help.]
[Kel? Kel has already been hard at work- he has been cleaning around, his mother would be shocked. Supplies are hard to come by in general and he has been biting plants around to try to find anything nice and edible for any parvence of a snack but no luck so far. For now? The siblings are 'safe' in their new location, no need to worry until the next crossing, and the teen feels like breathing again even if he can feel some other emptiness inside when he tries to remember his buddy Pedro-
Dependable adult, strong person, man Kel adored like family... but with little else associated with his persona.
It doesn't matter though, memories don't come back. And unlike the ones they 'lost', who truly matters to Kel is still there. Naegi-san, as Nagito calls him, will eventually come back to them though, right? He keeps himself busy moving stuff around- there isn't much stuff but the buildings are actually rather nice so-]
Oh?
[He blinked, turning in Frieda's direction while still holding up an ancient looking wooden stool. A wide grin spreads instinctively on his face.]
Of course! I mean, we do have proper buildings here, it's great! Heck, I'm half tempted to ask everyone to stick together in one place, like one large, large sleepover! The best!
[If everyone is in a single spot, more people will prevent Sunny from running away again and Mari from worrying, right? Extra safety. Plus, he'd like not to be alone...]
Oh, man... nah. You should relax, I will figure things out. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll even find fishing supplies and get ourselves some ghost fishes to eat! You should sit and relax, truly. But if you want we can chat a bit, I'd love to hear your opinions about this place.
[He can carry this kind of burdens on his own. Please don't mind him almost tripping as he attempts to lift both the stool and a bench up. They need all the comfy seats, right?]
[Nagito has been exploring, of course. Investigating is second nature, and anyway, it gives him something to focus on that isn't Makoto's disappearance. Nagito hasn't found him here yet, but surely he's somewhere nearby. He isn't going to believe otherwise.
He's making a mental list of places to search when he steps in through a doorway and comes close to getting smacked in the chest with a bench. He catches the edge automatically, his mechanical arm whirring as it takes most of the weight Nagito can handle. (Kel is still carrying most of the weight of the bench, though.)]
[Kel is so energetic..! Frieda is briefly baffled at the Crossing apparently not having made a dent in him at all, but then she rationalises that it must indeed be the relief over the siblings being accounted for that has him so elated.
With her mind slow and sluggish, she pauses, trying to even formulate an opinion of the new location - and that's when Nagito enters the room and promptly turns his near-literal run-in with the bench into practical support. For a moment, her eyes linger on his prosthesis, that magical machine arm that's like something out of Sunny's Captain Spaceboy comics, then she lifts her gaze to his face.]
Not at all.
[He isn't interrupting anything.]
Kel is preparing our next get-together.
[And since he just told her to leave it to him, it's perfectly fine for her to do just that... right? Clearly, Hanako had the wrong idea about his energy reserves!]
[Right? Absolutely energetic, happy and nothing else to be seen there. When Kel realizes he has been weighting the bench against Nagito (who he almost hit, oops), he's quick to lift it back up with a grunt- he'd rather not break anyone's prosthetics there, after all. Who even knows if they can all find any replacement for those in there.
Hanako is completely wrong when he says Kel may hit the bttom of his energy reserves, really, he's... invincible. Or that's what he keeps repeating himself. But he... does worry for others, though and it can be seens as his eyes linger on the other man.
Still alone? He does stop to wonder if Makoto still has to show up- it's just a matter of time, right? He doesn't know how he would feel if either of the siblings got lost so...]
Yeah! I do have a few ideas, actually. To make it super cool. Like we're almost in a videogame- I was thinking of preparing a fire pit with all we can find so we can pretend we have a large camping sleepover! And I wanted to create a box for people to share either group or single person suggestions, too- like, sometimes people aren't comfortable being too direct, right? Maybe that could help out more shy people. I just... have to find enough paper. What else...
I don't know, this place is soooo perfect for sleepovers, isn't it? I know I snore but I think it'd be lovely if we all found a spot where to all nap together?
[He hasn't been able to actually sleep since his death but...]
Oh, I've never been to a sleepover before! [Nagito wouldn't usually be so presumptuous as to assume he was invited, except people are very insistent he attends things here.] And you're helping, Frieda-san? That's very kind of you!
[Sorry, Frieda, you have been volunteered. It's impossible to tell, based on the guileless look on Nagito's face, if he did that on purpose or not.]
And this is where you're going to hold it? [He glances around.] You know, I'm actually pretty good at cleaning.
[Alright, Kel is in good spirits! Between all the ideas he's already come up with, Frieda latches on to just one to caution him about:]
The firepit will be outside, right?
[The last thing they need is for their most robust and spacious shelter so far to burn down! She'd feel especially bad for the groups who'll pass through here after them.]
Or else, we could capture glowworms - we don't need a real fire to cook food or warm ourselves, just the light effect. Are there any jars around to keep them in?
[Apparently, she has no objections to Nagito keeping her roped into the venture! As a matter of fact, having a task to focus on might do her good.]
Well, it's never too late to experience new things, right? Not even death could stop us, heh! Just make sure you look for something comfortable to wear, I'm going to ask everyone to try to find pajamas.
[AKA: you're invited. No one can escape The Kel. Especially not people like Nagito and Frieda who Sunny seems to like- Kel can only help the other so much, making sure he is with others who care about him is important. Sleepover? Apartment sharing? Please, just say yes.]
I was actually considering one of the big buildings at the end of the road, I just still have a lot of cleaning to do. can't find a broom, for example. What can I say- I feared doing cleaning in life, I guess cleaning supplies fear me in death. I'm the ghost of 'just leaving my stuff around', heh.
[At least he's getting used to be so casual about no longer being alive, right? His attention moved then to Frieda, even if he's careful not to accidentally hit Nagito while turning around with the bench now sitting on his shoulder.]
Yeah, duh! It's very humid here and humid wood tends to make a lot of smoke. I don't think anyone would like to deal with that. And I was thinking of gathering plants from the water and not just rocks to delimitate a proper area and make it safer. This time I have so much work to do!
[Which is a good thing... right? Less time to think about sad stuff.]
Oh? OOoooh that would be so cute. Frieda, your idea is amazing. We could even keep them inside if we all move in the same place, whichis something i hope I can convince people to do. just... little warm and cozy decorations. Like nightlights.
[After getting no real information about Sunny's fight with Kel out of the former, other than that he feels at fault for it and doesn't know how to mend things, Frieda seeks out the latter. Fortunately, she finds him alone somewhere in the marsh village.]
Kel, would you have a moment for me? Or maybe a little longer than a moment?
[Kel? Oh, Kel was busy gathering things around and trying to build stuff that was only looking weirder and weirder. It was just to keep his hands busy and, man, it was a blessing hearing someone call for him. He hopped around, offering Frieda a big, big grin-]
Of course! I have all the time! Is something bothering you? Someone, perhaps? Should I bite someone or go hunt for some weird creature in the lake that offended you? I'm all ears!
[Let's toss to the side his 'fishing rod' made of trash, he'll gladly keep himself busy.]
[There he goes again, being all smiles for everyone around him... going by how heavily the matter weighs on Sunny, Frieda can only imagine how much it must trouble Kel as well, and her expression remains serious. Seeing no value in trying to pussyfoot around the topic, she gets right to the point (after briefly looking around to ensure they're really alone).]
You had a fight with Sunny, didn't you? Can you tell me what is was about? Sunny is really downtrodden because of it. He thinks you two aren't friends anymore, but I can't imagine that that's how you feel.
[There's a sudden shift in pose. He's suddenly not moving that mush and kel looks incredibly more... stiff. Huh... well, he shouldn't be surprised considering Doc and Nagito both got to see him in a moment of weakness, but... he hoped to fix things with Sunny before it was in any way relevant to the group.]
I wouldn't call that a fight... [It was more like a one sided conversation that kept snowballing in the wrong direction.] And he is the one avoiding me, Frieda! I'm... I tried to actually talk with him and this is the result. That's what this is about.
[Kel cares so much and so deeply for Sunny, she had a suspicion that the latter, so prone to assuming the worst and assigning blame to himself, jumped to conclusions that were far from how Kel actually felt.]
What did you try to talk about with him? The discrepancies in your memories?
[That would be a difficult topic for Sunny to face, and she can see him attempting to block the whole matter out... but she'll let Kel confirm before jumping to conclusions herself.]
[Sadly, it does little to reassure him. He wishes he could talk with him and Mari has been strangely distant too lately. He feels... lonely? Kel's never been used to sit in small groups for too long, let alone limit his interactions for whatever reason. He talked with stranger and had fun all around with people, not... this. He really needs to talk with Sunng.]
Not really, no. The only discrepancy that doesn't feel like memory loss seems to be the week he doesn't remember spending in the hospital- [From the little he understands] and.. his final walk. But he was unconscious the whole time and then I am sure he didn't mean to do anything like that and it was something in his head so... it makes sense he doesn't remember, right? [Look at him, he'll never accept what Sunny did.] I... like I did something very bad when I failed him, he is also carrying his share of guilt for other stuff. He tends to blame himself easily for stuff, you know? And... it's really hard to explain not going into details, but I wanted him to know that I love him regardless of what he thinks of himself and it kind of... went sour from there. I really don't know when to stop my mouth, ahah...
[Another pause as he sits down on the nearest stump, arms crossed and the whole body language indicating his tension.]
He tends to live a bit in his own world and that... I like his imagination, but sometimes you have to ground yourself to reality, you know? Gosh, I sound like my dad right now.
[She listens and occasionally nods - Sunny does blame himself for things easily, and he does live in his own world a lot. She picks up on Kel baming himself, too - for Sunny's death, for saying the wrong things during their fight-that-wasn't-a-fight. She steps up to him and puts a hand on his shoulder.]
Kel, you're too hard on yourself. You only wanted to reassure him of your care for him. There'a good chance that Sunny couldn't have accepted that, no matter how you might have worded it, because of his low self-esteem.
[She sighs. How do they proceed here? If Sunny already rejected Kel's affection once out of self-hate and self-blame, and then proceeded to convince himself that the rejection made Kel hate him (as he must deserve, in his mind), it'll be a struggle to convince him otherwise.]
[He doesn't pull away, Kel does enjoy physical contact and that's... actually more effective than her initial words. Sorry, Frieda, the local teens have so much drama going on.]
Well, I'm just... too forward? I just- he should know I got his back no matter what, right? He and Mari are all I have left now. [A very healthy approach to things, Kel.] But I fumbled it bad, he kind of fainted because hard talks aren't for him and... now apparently you're telling me he thinks we're no longer friends? God, he's so dumb sometimes...
[He crossed his arms, letting out a sigh. He... had no idea how to proceed from there.]
If he's avoiding me I'm... not sure on what to do. Back home he avoided people for four whole years... and now I'm pretty certain I know why, but it's frustrating sometimes how his natural reaction is: retreat.
